Pope Larger Than Life

Pope’s Image Painted on NYC Skyscraper

The Pope’s visit to the USA is over. How many different portraits of the Pope appeared during that time. Everything from t-shirts, to postcards, to posters. And don’t forget about skyscrapers!
Colorado artist, Van Hecht-Nielsen, was part of the team that created the 30 foot tall mural of the Pope in honor of his (then up-coming) visit. The team included 4 artists. They worked 12 hour days for 10 days in order to complete the project.
Hecht-Nielsen is a devout Catholic and attributes the commission to Divine Intervention.
It must have been providential, because I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. God chose me for this job, I suppose,” he recounted.
The painter and Pope Francis may never meet, but they’re certainly linked by an artist’s rendering which towers above Manhattan.
The mural may already be history, as Hecht-Nielsen has also been commissioned to paint over the papal portrait this month.
